Where is the Retreat?

Set among the rushing waters of the Rocky Saugeen River where it winds mesmerizingly through the scenic diversity of the Grey Highland forests, the Ziontario Campground and Retreat Center rests upon 300 acres of rolling hills and walking trails near Priceville, Ontario. Although set in a quiet, serene, natural environment, the retreat center is conveniently located 2 ½ hours northwest of Toronto and 1 ½ hours north of Kitchener/Waterloo.

Mind-Body Activities and Spiritual Practices

Experience holistic mind-body practices, including yoga, mindfulness meditation, drum circles, and nature hikes. Additionally, the retreat offers activities that provide a safe setting for sharing thoughts and feelings, allowing you to explore yourself while creating meaningful connection with others.

Drum Circle

The beat of a drum is reminiscent of the rhythmical training we experienced in our mother’s uterus. When we hear a drum beat, especially a heartbeat pattern we unconsciously relax and feel safe. The drum circle helps to release stress, reduce anxiety and to reconnect with ourselves and with others. Experience a playful but non-competitive, uplifting, meditative, and healing space where we create various rhythms together. Join the circle and let the joyful vibrations transform you. No experience required. Drums supplied.

Mindfulness Meditation

This is a time to bring your attention to your experience of the present moment and set aside the mental "buzz" that causes anxiety, stress, and even physical pain. Whether you are a total beginner or an experienced meditator, these simple guided exercises will help you find your natural breathing cycle and deep relaxation in the midst of the constant flow of thoughts, feelings, and emotions. You are not required to sit in complicated poses or to stay for the whole length of the session. We combine elements of Zen Buddhism and modern psychological mindfulness considering all spiritual types and sensibilities in order to accommodate everyone: those who need to relax, those who need to manage stress and anxiety, and those who want to deepen their self-awareness and cultivate their spirituality.

Yoga

Yoga is a set of physical, mental, and spiritual practices. Its health benefits include increasing general health and stamina, reducing stress, and improving conditions brought about by sedentary lifestyles and may have positive effects on mental health. Yoga is a set of physical, mental, and spiritual practices. Its health benefits include increasing general health and stamina, reducing stress, and improving conditions brought about by sedentary lifestyles and may have positive effects on mental health. All ages and levels are encouraged to join Saturday morning and Saturday evening yoga sessions with Alex Leikermoser. Alex 's classes are fun, playful, and known to inspire people who never thought they could do yoga to incorporate the practice in their lives by experiencing the benefits of breathing and gentle movement.

Labyrinth Discernment Walk

“You enter a labyrinth to find yourself” Walking the Labyrinth is an unfolding journey into self and the experience of Holiness. This is an ancient spiritual ritual across all faith traditions reaching back 4000 years and for many has become a sacred space of pilgrimage. The experience is transformational, a roadmap to discerned new possibilities in your life. Entering the path is an emptying, the centre point is an inspirational present sense of being. Proceeding outward is a time of discernment from the healing and freeing grace of knowing oneself in the presence of the Holy. Through your walk the pathway of understanding, resolve and alignment with purpose, identity and calling emerges in your life.

Walking Meditation

Find your mind in the experience of the world around you while mindfully walking together in silence. The technique originates in the Zen tradition of Japanese Buddhism, and consists in placing one's attention on all physical sensations as we slowly walk through the woods.

This meditative practice will help you focus the awareness on the senses as you become one with the nature that surrounds you, gradually letting go of replaying past events and worrying about your to-do list.

Sacred Listening

The act of taking time to listen, not only to the words of those in front of us, but also to the heart, is crucial to building authentic connection. Sacred Listening is a practice where a small group of people intentionally listen to each other share freely on a focused question.

After a short time of quiet reflection, the other members begin to share what emerged for them - what thoughts or insights were received - without counsel or advice. Only honest response as space is held open for moments of joy and sorrow, for Sacred Listening is a time of deep investment in all aspects of life.

Mindful Dialogue

When we engage in conversation in ways that bring out the best in us and inspires everyone to discover themselves and one another, we are called forward into a greater purpose. Enjoy a cup of coffee and be part of a meaningful conversation. Make new friends of all walks of life who share a common desire to make a difference in the world. This is a safe space to share thoughts in an open and accepting environment that encourages dialogue over debate.

What Matters Most: Leaving Our Caves (Lecture)

Plato, the founder of Western philosophy, described the world of our every day experience as a shadow play being watched by prisoners chained together in a cave. If we could know the real world, he asserted, it would be like ascending out of the cave to see the sunlight for the first time. The same modern metaphors have been explored in science fiction programs like The Matrix. What if the world around us was merely virtual, like the matrix or a holodeck? In this workshop, we will explore the roots of philosophical idealism and consider individually and together the question “what matters most”? How much of our time and energy is spent on things that are merely conventional or inessential? Where do we find real meaning?

Expression through Acrylics (Workshop)

You’re invited to feel joy and experience the ecstatic state of connection through acrylic design. You do not have to have any training or background in art to find meaning through painting. Join our workshop and expand your spiritual awareness by painting feathers together. Traditionally, the feather symbolizes spiritual evolution and communication with the universe. As we explore the feather’s form, colour, and its mysterious story, we will share together a journey of expression through acrylics.

Ancient and Modern Perspectives on Mindfulness (Lecture)

In this presentation we will explore the origins of mindfulness in ancient times, how this practice evolved throughout the centuries, and what the modern disciplines that study cognitive science can tell us about it. We will learn concepts of psychology, neuroscience, philosophy of mind, and mythology that will enhance our practice of mindfulness.

Empowered Women/ Stronger Communities (Workshop)

Could Lessons Learned in Nepal Work Here and Elsewhere?

Working with local partners, World Accord sponsors a successful program aimed at empowering women in rural Nepal. By setting up women’s support networks, and by giving training and micro-loans to local women, the program has struck at the roots of poverty and gender inequity in this remote society. Best of all, the women themselves have created their own businesses tooled for their traditional economic environment and gone on to share their training with others. In this workshop, we’ll review the progress of World Accord’s program in Nepal and consider whether lessons learned there could be useful elsewhere and even here in our own communities.
