Constructing CETA: Canada, the EU and Progressive Trade in the 21st Century
Canada 2020 - in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union to Canada - will host Cecilia Malmström, Chief Trade Commissioner for the European Union and one of the architects of the Comprehensive Economic & Trade Agreement (CETA) on Tuesday, March 21st in Ottawa.
Fresh from CETA's ratification in the European Parliament, Commissioner Malmström will deliver a speech entitled The EU's Trade Policy: Effective, transparent, based on values. She will then engage in an onstage Q&A with the audience, moderated by the Toronto Star's Paul Wells.
Registration for the event is free and open to the media and public. Space is limited.
The largest bilateral agreement since the signing of NAFTA, CETA promises to dramatically liberalize trade between Canada and the European market. As we approach the beginning stages of implementation, we want to know:
- How will CETA impact Canada's trade flows in the short to medium term?
- As borders begin to thicken in key markets, what challenges lay ahead for CETA?
- What determines the success of a values-based agreement?
- How might CETA be used as a model for other agreements?
Commissioner Cecilia Malmström will outline the role and future of EU trade policy as a way to "shape globalization" and promote progressive values.
