Description

MediaStyle presents the second installment of its new speaker series: Conversations in The Commons. This series brings researchers from Carleton University into The Commons to talk about big issues in their respective fields of research. These conversations will take the form of informal armchair discussions, facilitated by a MediaStyle team member. Grab a drink/nibble, sit back, and learn with us.

Technology shapes how we perceive the world around us. Invisible forces – algorithms – track our behaviours, with the goal of serving content tailored to our tastes.

What are the implications of technology predicting our next move? Are we simply living in a world with more easily digestible content, or are we living in our own echo chambers? What does it mean for you, and what does it mean for democracy?

Join MediaStyle for a discussion with Dr. Sandra Robinson from Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication. She'll bring her specialization in the topics of privacy and surveillance, social data and analytics, and software design and algorithms to help us understand the impact of technology in our increasingly public lives.

If you cannot join us we invite you to join the conversation online. We will be livestreaming the event on our Facebook page.

Please note: The Commons is located on the third floor of a heritage building in downtown Ottawa with no elevator access. As a result, MediaStyle is not wheelchair accessible or otherwise accessible to those with mobility impairments.
