Description

The Stronger Together: Coping Families Support Group Facilitator’s Learning Session is a one-day learning session for individuals and professionals who wish to learn how to facilitate support groups for families coping with active addiction. We will review a successful peer support model for families (Parents Forever) with a loved one in active addiction and share what's worked and lessons learned. We will review aspects of active addiction, different types of support groups, safety and containment, what it means to be trauma-informed, how to address power dynamics within the group, how to interview members, and more. Participants will be provided with activity examples and facilitator resources.

More information about Stronger Together:

Too many families and communities have been personally and tragically affected by the opioid overdose crisis in Canada. Stronger Together is a series of dialogues and learning sessions for families and allies impacted by substance use.

In addition to the Dialogue for Families Who Have Lost a Loved One to Substance Use, we are also hosting dialogue and learning sessions for families who have lost a loved one to substance use, families with a loved one in active addiction, and service providers. Registration for other sessions can be found at: strongertogethervan.eventbrite.ca.

There will be three community dialogues with: 1. families with loved ones in active addiction, 2. families who have lost loved ones to substance use, and 3. service providers supporting families. Community knowledge will be documented and used to inform substance use service planning in the Vancouver region, as well as research directions.

We will close with four full-day learning sessions for people interested in running: 1. Grief and loss support groups, and 2. Support groups for families whose loved ones are actively using. More details below:
