Come find out how the University of Manitoba has incorporated clinical research and clinical care to create an effective and responsive learning health system.
Objectives
- Review the presentation, spectrum of illness, and clinical outcomes associated with COVID-19.
- Present our clinical and scientific response to COVID-19 with regard to clinical trials in a learning health system.
- Highlight clinical trials we are leading globally from Manitoba.
- Discuss novel clinical trials designs and facilitators of research in pandemic.
Speakers
Ryan Zarychanski, MD, MSc., FRCPC is a Critical Care physician, Hematologist, and Clinician-Scientist at the University of Manitoba and CancerCare Manitoba. He’s a senior scientist at the Research Institute of Oncology and Hematology and an affiliate member of the George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation. His research focuses on the hematologic aspects of critical illness where he leads several national and international randomized trials in the fields of sepsis and transfusion medicine. Dr. Zarychanski leads the COVID-19 clinical trials research group in Manitoba and is the chair or co-chair of three international trials evaluating anticoagulation strategies and convalescent plasma in COVID-19.
Dr. Sylvain Lother, MD, DTMH, FRCPC is a Critical Care and Infectious Disease physician and junior clinical-scientist at the University of Manitoba who is enrolled in the Masters of Science program in the Department of Community Health Sciences. His thesis work is focused on modelling risk factors for disease progression to critical illness in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. In collaboration with the expertise of clinician-scientists, he has been involved in several COVID-19 clinical trials both locally and abroad. Along with other local leaders, he continues to contribute to a rapidly expanding understanding of COVID-19 in Manitoba and around the world.
Accreditation
The CHI Grand Rounds are a self-approved group learning activity (section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This grand round is accredited for a maximum of 1 hour.
