Workplace harassment, bullying, and discrimination at work are a lot more common than many business leaders would like to admit.

A survey by Glassdoor of 1,100 employees found that 61% of employees had witnessed or experienced workplace discrimination based on age, race, gender, or LGBTQ identity.

Some of this is a result of microaggressions, or indirect, often unintentional expressions of racism, sexism, ageism, or ableism. They come out in seemingly innocent comments by people who might be well-intentioned, but are in fact perceived as harmful.

From telling a new female employee that she "looks like a student" to commenting on the "fluent English" of a colleague of colour, microaggressions often exist in the workplace. And they can make a workplace feel uncomfortable, unsafe, and toxic.

How can you identify and stop microaggressions at your workplace? How do you manage and de-escalate conflicts at work that are caused by microaggressions?
