Event description

Description

Continuing this new informal lecture series presented monthly over the course of our current exhibition, guest speakers present on different aspects of contemporary art and practice.

Artist-run Methods for Collaboration and Community Building
Artist and cultural worker Su Ying Strang will outline her organizational work in artist-run centres — focusing on her roles as Director of The New Gallery and President of the Alberta Association of Artist-run Centres. Her talk will present The New Gallery’s work with peer organizations and the collective efforts that take place in the artist-run community to prioritize collaboration and peer mentorship over competition. The New Gallery has embraced the artist-run principles of generosity, criticality, care, and openness to risk over four decades of contemporary art programming in Calgary/Mohkinstsis. These principles continue to guide Strang’s commitment to artist and community-centred programming and operations in her work. Strang will also highlight recent work done in support of another one of The New Gallery’s core values — being responsible neighbours and members of a community. This segment will trace the ongoing development of the organization’s public programming after joining the community of Calgary Chinatown in 2013. The overview of this programming will frame how contemporary art is in relation to, and can support, the essential labour of community building.

Attendance limited to 20 participants per class.
Registration essential. Opens 26 February, 11AM.
