Description

We want you to join us in launching the next phase!

Thanks to the support of Family and Community Support Services Edmonton (FCSS), AAISA and The Calgary Sexual Health Centre (CSHC) are now offering a workshop to immigrant serving organizations in Edmonton to increase comfort and skills to support clients from the LGBTQ community, and integrate sexual health into practice with clients.

In this workshop, we will build on the concepts identified in the “Courage to Begin” report and discuss the root causes of homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and heterosexism. We will then examine how personal values about sexuality may help or hinder our abilities to work with diverse clients. This hands-on workshop offers participants the opportunity to work through scenarios and challenges regarding inclusive practices in a safe, respectful space. Participants will in turn leave with practical strategies for creating a safer, more inclusive, and respectful work environment, while additionally learning about community resources and referrals.

The launch workshop will be held from 9:30am-12pm on April 12, 2018.
The location will be confirmed closer to the date.

As part of this project we are also offering 3 organizations in Edmonton the opportunity to collaborate with us over the next year to develop a plan that integrates these concepts into your organization. CSHC will work with each organization to determine their needs and AAISA will build a customized plan based on these insights. This may include:

  • Staff training for all employees. Workshops that can be offered depending on the organization and its individual needs.
  • Organizational audit/assessment. The review of forms, policy and physical spaces to assess inclusion and safety for members of the LGBTQ community.
  • Curriculum review. The evaluation of any healthy relationships/life skills programming and offer suggestions on how to include LGBTQ curriculum to ensure inclusion and safety for members of the LGBTQ community.

We invite any organization interested in this part of the project to attend a lunch after the workshop on April 12th to discuss your needs and outline next steps. We will start promptly at 12:30 pm and end by 2:00 pm. Due to limited financial resources, and dependent on the size of the organization, we may only focus on one of the listed strategies. However, we are committed to work with each organization to determine plausible accomplishments with the resources available.
