WORKSHOP FORMAT – Discussion based, includes writing exercises, so come prepared to create, based on what you learn

Topics to be covered:- What makes a memorable character? (Description, Motivation, Hero or Villain? etc.)

- Attributes: is he/she/it the power fantasy/wish fulfillment character?- Flaws - the character has needs, motivations, errors- How to make your Character Compelling (Role, Characteristics, Emotions, etc.)- Should the character change? Why or why not?- Techniques for Writing the Interesting Character (Narrative choices, etc.)

- Sneak in backstory - give a character history strategically

- Significance or impact on other characters

About the facilitator:

Den Valdron is a speculative fiction writer, pop-culture essayist and aboriginal rights lawyer, living and working in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a writer, his short stories have been published in magazines and anthologies in North America, Britain, Australia and Russia. He has several collections of speculative fiction and horror stories and novels. He’s also published extensive nonfiction about Canadian Sci Fi – LEXX and Starlost, Cult television and movies, including Doctor Who, and topics as diverse as writing, publishing, self-publishing, 1930’s pulps, Lovecraft, Burroughs, Godzilla and nerd culture.
