Facilitated E-learning training on Creating Inclusive Spaces for Immigrants and Refugees with In/Visible Disabilities

Purpose of Course :

The purpose of this FREE introductory course is to help front-line practitioners working with immigrant and refugee communities better understand barriers and challenges immigrants and refugees(including newcomers) with in/visible disabilities experience and to work towards creating welcoming,inclusive and accessible agencies for service users.

Moving to a new country presents many challenges and opportunities for newcomers. The settlement process can be especially challenging for newcomers with in/visible disabilities. Learning who newcomers with in/visible disabilities are, how to welcome and support them is something the settlement sector is becoming more aware of. While our broader understanding of disability has led to the enhancement of legislation and programs; when it comes to the unique obstacles facing newcomers with disabilities, service delivery has not been able to effectively address their needs.

OCASI is committed to supporting the settlement sector create welcoming, positive and inclusive spaces for all. This course will allows settlement sector employees to acquire new skills and knowledge in areas related to service provision to immigrants and refugees with in/visible disabilities. Through this course, settlement sector employees learn more about immigrants and refugees within/visible disabilities and their diversities; gain a greater understanding of the different legislation that exist internationally, nationally, provincially/territorially as it relates to the rights of people with disabilities; examine the relationship between disability, race, immigrant/refugee status and other layers of marginalization. Moreover, sector employees will become better aware of the requirement of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and what their organizations need to do to become accessible in the long term.

Upon completion of the Training you will be able to:

1. Compare and contrast how people with in/visible disabilities have been discriminated against in many parts of the world including Canada.

2. Explain the different social and cultural understandings of disability in different parts of the world.

3. Recall international, national, and provincial laws that are in place to protect the rights of people with in/visible disabilities.

4. Recognize how structures and systems of power impact people with in/visible disabilities

5. Identify good/best practices to support the inclusion of immigrants/refugees with in/visible disabilities.

Criteria for Participation:

This course is open to settlement workers and service providers who are working in or with the immigrant and refugee serving sector across the province who are willing to:

  • Commit to approximately 2-4 hours of learning each week for the period of 4 weeks.
  • Engage in active participation and complete assignments each week
  • Complete the entire program

At the successful completion of the entire e-course you will receive a certification of completion from OCASI.

Please note this is a 4 session facilitated ONLINE training

You will receive instructions on how to access the course materials 2 days prior to the beginning of each course.

There is no “LIVE” component to the training and you are expected to review each week’s course materials at your own time and complete the work on a weekly basis. While you can access each module at your convenience during each week for the course, they will be available as follows:

Module 2: Tuesday , September 10th, 2019

Module 3: Tuesday , September 17th, 2019

Module 4: Tuesday , September 24th, 2019

Course Facilitator:

Sihem Ait Hammouda is one of the Accessibility Initiative coordinators at OCASI. She is a trained facilitator, an inclusive educator and professional with over 15 years in facilitating training and developing curricula. Sihem holds a Master's degree in Law and a Project Management Diploma. As an experienced community researcher who works primarily on equity and diversity issues using an anti-racist anti-oppressive framework, she strives to empower newcomers with disabilities as well as strengthen the capacity of the settlement sector to better serve this vulnerable population. Her work has focused on access issues and the creation of inclusive communities for people with disabilities
