Creative Photography with your DSLR: Learn Tips and Secrets from a Pro
Meet like-minded photo enthusiasts, learn, have fun, get inspired to shoot and get new creative ideas you can use to take your photography to the next level this summer!
Ideal for: Amateurs, Advanced Amateurs, Aspiring Pros
First, a brief, informal 'classroom' lecture and discussion, to cover all the important basics and principles of photography. The 'technical stuff' that most people find boring or intimidating and never learn, made interesting and clear so that you understand photography and your learning will accelerate. We will cover concepts and principles even advanced amateurs or pros will benefit from. Topics will cover the science and art of photography, how the two work together to help you create the best images.
Then, a few hours of shooting and learning in the field, trying out the concepts learned. Includes demos of photographic principles and techniques, lighting demos on a live model, and exercises and mini-assignments to illustrate principles, sharpen and expand your vision. We will start shooting at the park, and then take a short ferry ride to Granville Island and continue shooting there. Plenty of time to shoot and ask the instructor about your specific questions.
LIMIT: 14 students
"I've attended a half a dozen workshops before, but Stuart teaches photography from a different perspective, and I learned so much that was never even mentioned in my previous workshops! "
I'd like to attend but cannot make the date, is there another one?
Sorry, the workshop is offered only once a year. You may send us your email if you're interested in knowing when the next one is.
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
No, if you're a 5-year-old genius, you're welcome to come!
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Easily accessible from all public transport. 4 blocks from Yaletown Station. There is usually ample 2 hr free parking around. Biking or walking to the event is encouraged!
What can/can't I bring to the event?
Your passion for photography. Bring your camera, lenses, flash, filters, and standard kit you feel comfortable shooting with, and your camera manual. You may bring small collapsible reflectors if you have them, and a laptop or tablet to download your images if you wish to see them larger and share. Those joining us for the evening portion are advised to bring a tripod.
You may bring snacks or drinks. Please bring comfortable shoes and additional clothing for weather changes.
No video or sound recording.
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
Can I update my registration information?
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
What is the refund policy?
Refunds are possible up to 15 days before the event. After that, credit for the full amount will be given, which can be used for a future workshop, or for one-on-one mentoring. A full refund will be given if the organizer has to cancel for any reason, e.g., an assignment shoot conflict.
The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
Yes, just inform us.
Is this event on rain or shine?
Yes, we will hold the 'classroom' session indoors nearby, and the shooting session under a large bridge if it rains.
Do we need an SLR? Can I use my point and shoot or other camera?
You may use any camera, but we will be discussing camera controls (shutter speeds, apertures, different focal lengths, etc) and how to use them creatively, so you may not be able to take advantage of all these controls, unless your camera has some manual settings.
