INSTRUCTOR BIO

I identify as 3/4 white and 1/4 Tillamook from the Southern end of Coast Salishian Speakers, although nobody speaks our language anymore. My family came to Canada in 1953 after living in all the western and mid-western States and Mexico. My father was in Seismic work. We had a Pawnee crew and my God father was Owen Echo Hawk. I have been carving since I was 5 according to my mom. We visited my mom’s parents every summer and I spent summers and weekends with him while going to school in Portland. My Grandfather was James Forest, a Nehalem Tillamook on the Oregon coast. He taught me tool making and told me many stories from the coast and how to represent them in woods. I began teaching with the Calgary Board of Education in 1980 and have taught ever since. I've taught across Canada and the United States and am currently teaching 8 two-day classes through Lee Valley Tools to celebrate Canada's 150. We are doing Westcoast Paddles. For the last 10 years, I have run classes out of my shop. I have also taught week long classes at Kin Beach PP near Comox for 15 years. My commissioned pieces are in France, Germany, United States and Canada although I do not work through any galleries and don't have a web site - just word of mouth.
