Event Details

As Canadian cities become increasingly culturally diverse, one size does not always fit all when it comes to supporting healthy child development. Autism care providers need to respond to varied perspectives, values, and behaviors about health and well-being. Failure to understand and manage social and cultural differences may have significant health consequences for minority groups in particular.

SAAAC’s inaugural Culture Counts Conference will engage with timely issues of how to provide effective autism support to a rapidly changing population.

The event will provide you with a space to connect with families, researchers, health professionals, advocates and community agencies to better understand ASD as it relates to minority communities and the challenges faced by underserved communities

Conference Objectives

1. Define culturally responsive practice and its importance in ASD treatment, education, community service, and employment practices

2. Facilitate experience and information exchange between families and ASD/health care professionals

3. Highlight programs, interventions, and projects that are focusing on culturally responsive practices in health, education, community service, and employment

Conference Takeaways

• Learn from leaders in Cultural Responsive ASD Support

• Hear a range of perspectives from individuals and organizations who have been tackling issues facing marginalized families living with ASD and other developmental disabilities

• Explore promising culturally responsive autism practices and programming new to the field

• Build Meaningful Networks for Change

• Build relationships among researchers, community-based clinicians, community organizations and families to facilitate collaboration and better provide ASD support to under-served communities.

Celebrating 10 Years of Community Service

In March of 2018, the SAAAC Autism Centre will be celebrating their 10th year of operation. To mark this milestone, the centre will be hosting 3 unique events on March 2 and 3 including an inaugural conference focusing on culturally responsive autism support for newcomer and underserved communities; an ambitious musical about the journey of a young musician with ASD; and the organization's annual Radiant Night dinner and dance gala. The celebration is expected to draw 2000 attendees over two days and will help SAAAC continue its mission of transforming lives impacted by ASD.
