Description

A National Celebration of Canadian Culture! Discover your inner artist this Culture Days! Join us at the Tett Centre for Creativity Learning on Sunday, September 29th for a building-wide Open House. Enjoy a wonderful selection of accessible performances and arts activities for all ages and abilities. Donations are welcome at the door.

Mark your calendars: the 10th annual Culture Days weekend takes place September 27, 28 & 29, 2019!

"On the last weekend of each September, millions of people across the country attend thousands of free, participatory arts and culture events in their communities and beyond. By profiling hands-on arts and cultural programming and creating direct connections between the public and creators, Culture Days is making arts and culture more accessible!

Culture Days is a collaborative initiative that welcomes public participation. Everyone has a part to play in Culture Days whether you’re already passionate about the arts or interested in discovering something new."


FRIDAY – SEPTEMBER 27th

6:00pm-7:00pm – Afrisa Dance Workshop | Rehearsal Hall, 2nd Floor, Room 203

Afrisa with Abena Beloved is an upbeat dance class that introduces participants to modern west African music and dance called afrobeats. This class will also explore and incorporate movements from traditional Ghanaian dances for a more rooted understanding of the origins of the dance form.

6:30pm-8:30pm – Exhibition Opening by Pengyuan Wang | Tett Gallery, 1st Floor, Room 109

Art media, oil painting, watercolor, traditional fine brushwork silk painting and Chinese calligraphy. From east to west, both traditional and modern, we invite you to view a beautiful exhibition by Pengyuan Wang.


SATURDAY – SEPTEMBER 28th

9:00am-7:00pm – Exhibition by Pengyuan Wang | Tett Gallery, 1st Floor, Room 109

Art media, oil painting, watercolor, traditional fine brushwork silk painting and Chinese calligraphy. From east to west, both traditional and modern, we invite you to view a beautiful exhibition by Pengyuan Wang.


10:00am-12:00pm – Kids Creativity Club | Rehearsal Hall, 2nd Floor, Room 203

Kids Creativity Club is an opportunity for children and their families to experience the arts together. Participants can enjoy a variety of hands-on, creative arts activities. Come and explore, create, and be inspired at the Tett!

Suitable for children ages 1-10. Adult supervision required. Donations welcome.


10:30am-11:45am – Wire Wrapped Gemstone People | Activity Room, 1st Floor, Room 108

You will be guided to create little gem people using a craft wire wrapping technique with the Kingston Lapidary & Mineral Club. This can be created to stand alone or designed to hang on a loop/chain to be used in the window or worn as jewelry. (chain/loop not provided in workshop). To register, please contact: Lapidary.moss@gmail.com Cost: $5 per student for supplies.


12:00pm-4:00pm – Joe’s Mill Open House | Joes Mill, 1st Floor, Room 110

The library has over 1000 instruments and resources including guitars, keyboards, drums, horns, violins, percussion, amplifiers, exotic instruments, sheet music, and much more – and they’re all available to borrow … free of charge!


10:00am-3:00pm – Sheep to Fall | Kingston Handloom Weavers & Spinners, 2nd Floor, Room 205

Join the KHWS members outside, at the front of the Tett Centre, as they demonstrate the process of fleecing to create mitts, hats and scarves! Learn more about the organization and meet the artists. If weather is poor, the event will be moved inside the Handloom Weavers and Spinners Studio.


2:00pm-4:00pm – Partcipainting | Activity Room, 1st Floor, Room 108

Participainting is a project that engages the public to contribute to a canvas with quality paint and brush. Each participant is given a set amount of paint and allowed to paint until their heart's content. In the end the canvas is full, abstract and unique with many contributors. Participainting aims to give additional value and life to abstract art. Profits of the final product’s sale will be donated back to a local charity or non-profit organization.

Together Yessica and Théo collaborate with Indigenous drumming and singing across Turtle Island, and grow the message of bringing together all people from all directions of the world, in community with compassion and care. Discover drums from around the world available to try out! Don't miss out on the Ollin Drum Circle! Come drum, sing, dance, connect, and celebrate Culture Days!

This event is free and will be accepting optional pay-what-you-may donations for admission.

A tiger, a bear, a butterfly! What will you be? Join Rosemary and bring your ideas to life!

Play with clay! The Kingston Potters Guild invites you to create a ceramic mosaic for the refurbished Richardson Bath House.

Explore the studio and learn how you can get invovled! The Kingston Lapidary and Mineral Club provides a postive environment for local rockhounds, lapidary enthusiasts and silversmiths.

Sing, dance, and move! Bring the whole family, and enjoy a sing-along with Mariah Horner.


12:00pm-3:00pm - Modern Fuel Gallery Tours | Modern Fuel Artist Run Centre, 1st Floor

Visit and view Modern Fuels latest exhibition! Modern Fuel is a long running cultural non-profit group facilitating the presentation, interpretation, and production of contemporary visual, time-based and interdisciplinary arts.


1:00pm-2:00pm – Flamenco Music Performance | Malting Tower, 3rd Floor, Room 311

Marta and Richard's music is traditional flamenco, with a strong flavour of Spain which appeals to all ages. They have been performing together for over twenty years, and have performed their music around the world.


12:30pm-2:00pm – CRAFT HUB with Ollin.ca | Rehearsal Hall, 2nd Floor, Room 203

Join Yessica and Théo as they walk us through the steps making Worry Dolls and Ojos de Dios! Learn about the history and meaning while getting to weave colourful yarn to make unique creations! All ages welcome, by donation.


10:00am-2:00pm - Stardust by Anna Soper: Unit 115 Exhibition | The Kingston Art Council, 1stFloor, Room 115

UNIT 115 September artist Anna Soper leads you through a fun and experimental workshop exploring a compelling photographic technique. Over a 45-minute session, you will learn the basics of composition, exposure, and processing, and bring home your own finished print!

No prior experience required. All materials are supplied, though you are encouraged to bring small items (feathers, seeds, leaves, etc.) to print with.

The workshop will take place in the Kingston Arts Council's Office in the Tett Centre for Learning and Creativity.

12:00pm-2:00pm – Hexaflexagon Activity | Creativity Studio Common Area, 2nd Floor

Join Creativity Studio Artisit, Floriana Ehninger-Cuervo, and create your own hexaflexagon! A hexaflexagon is a little bit of magic that lives at the intersection of paper-craft and geometry. Come make and decorate your own.

All ages, however children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Donations welcome.

Join us at our studios with Artist in residence Kay Kenney for two free dance workshops on Sunday September 29th.
