CULTURE DAYS 2019

A National Celebration of Canadian Culture

Mark your calendars: the 10th annual Culture Days weekend takes place September 27, 28 & 29, 2019!

On the last weekend of each September, millions of people across the country attend thousands of free, participatory arts and culture events in their communities and beyond. By profiling hands-on arts and cultural programming and creating direct connections between the public and creators, Culture Days is making arts and culture more accessible!

Culture Days is a collaborative initiative that welcomes public participation. Everyone has a part to play in Culture Days whether you’re already passionate about the arts or interested in discovering something new.

FRIDAY – SEPTEMBER 27th

6:00pm-7:00pmAfrisa Dance Workshop | Rehearsal Hall, 2nd Floor, Room 203

Afrisa with Abena Beloved is an upbeat dance series that introduces participants to modern west African music and dance called afrobeats. This class will also explore and incorporate movements from traditional Ghanaian dances for a more rooted understanding of the origins of the dance form.

Learning outcomes:

  • Knowledge of main rhythms of afrobeats
  • Experience with foundational movements
  • Learning of fully choreographed dance

Art media, oil painting, watercolor, traditional fine brushwork silk painting and Chinese calligraphy. From east to west, both traditional and modern, we invite you to view a beautiful exhibition by Pengyuan Wang.

Join Christina Maclachlan for Kids Creativity Club! Kids Creativity Club is an opportunity for children and their families to experience the arts together. Participants can enjoy a variety of hands-on, creative arts activities. Come and explore, create, and be inspired at the Tett!

Suitable for children ages 1-10. Adult supervision required. Donations welcome.

10:30am-11:45amWire Wrapped Gemstone People | Activity Room, 1st Floor, Room 108

You will be guided to create little gem people using a craft wire wrapping technique with the Kingston Lapidary & Mineral Club. This can be created to stand alone or designed to hang on a loop/chain to be used in the window or worn as jewelry. (chain/loop not provided in workshop). To register, please contact: Lapidary.moss@gmail.com Cost: $5 per student for supplies.

The library has over 1000 instruments and resources including guitars, keyboards, drums, horns, violins, percussion, amplifiers, exotic instruments, sheet music, and much more – and they’re all available to borrow … free of charge!

2:00pm-4:00pm – Partcipainting| Activity Room, 1st Floor, Room 108

Participainting is a project that engages the public to contribute to a canvas with quality paint and brush. Each participant is given a set amount of paint and allowed to paint until their heart's content. In the end the canvas is full, abstract and unique with many contributors. Participainting aims to give additional value and life to abstract art. Profits of the final product’s sale will be donated back to a local charity or non-profit organization.

Marta and Richard's music is traditional flamenco, with a strong flavour of Spain which appeals to all ages. They have been performing together for over twenty years, and have performed their music around the world.

Create your own worry doll or Ojos de dios. Ojos de dios are an indigenous craft from Mexico using various yarns and ribbons. All ages welcome, by donation.

ABOUT:

The Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning is a Not-for-Profit, charitable organization that operates an historic city-owned building on Kingston’s waterfront. We provide professionally equipped and affordable space to artists and arts organizations for artistic creation.

We are home to eight tenant arts organizations, eight resident artist studios, and three multi-use rentable public spaces. We are a dynamic arts hub that coordinates and creates high-quality, accessible, arts-focused programming for all levels of artistic abilities and experience.

Our partners include artists, arts and community organizations, The Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, and the City of Kingston’s Department of Cultural Services.

As a unique cultural landmark for Kingston residents and area visitors, we enhance learning and public participation in the arts.
