Part Mindfulness Practice. Part Protest. Part Social Experiment. Part Performance Art. Part Random Happening. Part Culture Jam. Part Catalyst?
This summer I organized several group mindfulness practices in which the main part of the session was a silent walk through High Park. For many people attending, it was their first time participating in outdoor group practice. The difference between solo practice indoors and group practice outdoors is hard to exaggerate. Everyone who participated said it was a great and unique experience.
To me the very opposite of the lush beauty of the woods is the shopping mall. Malls however have become our new temples. And the woods for the most part are empty. What kind of questions will arise for you during this Silent Mall Walk? Will it nudge you in an unexpected way? What will the reaction be of the shoppers?
This Culture Jam focuses on the sights and sounds of the mall. We'll be walking in a silent procession in partners. For the first half of the walk one partner will be blindfolded. They will be focusing on the sounds of the mall. The other partner who will be leading, will be focusing on the sights of the mall. Partners will switch at the midpoint. We will go for coffee afterwards to discuss our experience at Page One Cafe:
