Event description

Description

In this beginner woodworking class students will build a cutting board that is 12” x 18” and made out of various types of hardwood. Participants will learn some basic woodworking skills and walk away with a simple and attractive cutting board that is ready to use at home.

This is a two-part workshop.

Part 1 – September 9, 6pm to 9pm
Learn how to rip and cut wood using the table saw. Boards will be glued up and assembled and left to dry.

Part 2 – September 16, 6pm to 9pm
Now that your cutting board is dry, you will learn to use the planer and jointer to make the board level. Board will be sanded and an optional decorative edge can be handrouted as well. At the end of the class, the cutting board will be finished with foodsafe oil so it is ready to take home and use.

About the Instructor:

Greta Burley is a Vancouver based artist and furniture maker. Mosaic was her first glimpse into the world of 3D design, and learning mosaic inspired her to study Joinery. She is a graduate of the Joinery Foundation program
at British Columbia Institute of Technology (2005) and also completed a Certificate in 3D Design specializing in Industrial Design at Emily Carr University (2017). She has had a varied career in the trades working in wood and metal fabrication for bespoke shops and in the film industry. In January 2019 Greta became a member of the Tools for Women program at MakerLabs in Vancouver. This ignited her passion for woodworking again and you will find her there most days, either working on projects of her own or teaching newcomers to the Wood Lab.
