Description

Cyber security is a growing concern. Join us and learn the techniques to prevent, detect, and respond to these threats.

Workshop by Ayhan Tek: Cyber security is a growing concern with ever increasing cyber threats aiming to steal more patient and health plan member records. With the adoption of digital patient records and proliferation of IoT devices in the healthcare industry, Cyber criminals now find greater attack surfaces in healthcare sector to gain access data and hold healthcare networks to ransom. While other industries experience similar attacks, cyber-attacks can have ramifications beyond financial loss and breach of privacy due to the nature of the healthcare industry’s critical mission – saving lives.

Despite such significant repercussions of a cyber-attack, the healthcare sector has lagged behind other industries in terms of its protection from cyber threats. With the changing threat landscape in healthcare, the nature of preventing, detecting, and responding to those threats requires a new approach revolving around five pillars:

1. Identify – Identify which systems, assets, data, and capabilities need to be protected.

2. Protect –Protect sensitive assets and data by developing and implementing adequate security controls.

3. Detect – Spot the security anomalies and events by implementing detective security controls, processes, and technologies.

4. Respond – Respond detected anomaly or security incident in a timely manner.

5. Recover – Restore the appropriate capabilities that were disrupted through a cyber incident.

Objectives

Through the workshop, we pursue following goals:

1. Elevate the awareness of healthcare cyber security best practices

2. Learn about cyber security frameworks that can be adopted by healthcare organizations to enhance security posture

3. Understand HIPAA Security Rule and safeguards that must be applied to secure medical devices and healthcare networks, and data

4. Open new stream of collaborations between WIMTACH at Centennial College and healthcare industries for defining and developing new cyber security solutions and practices.
