Paper Covers Rock is a new annual readers and writers festival on Salt Spring Island, BC, taking place March 5-7 2021.

About this Event

In this workshop you will explore techniques for getting into the "flow" when writing memoir.

Darrel will walk you through seven specific techniques for taking your writing to a deeper level with respect to the development of characters, scenes, plot, and rich descriptions.

Darrel J McLeod is Nehiyaw (Cree) from Northern Canada, Treaty 8. He has had a diverse career: a French teacher, School Principal in Yekooche First Nation, Director of a curriculum center, Executive Director of Education and International Affairs at the Assembly of First Nations, and Chief Negotiator for the Government of Canada.

Darrel’s first book, Mamaskatch: A Cree Coming of Age was published by Douglas and McIntyre in the fall of 2018 and won the Governor Genera’s Award for non-fiction, was shortlisted for the Royal Bank Charles Taylor Prize and several other awards. The sequel, Peyakow will be released in the spring of 2021. He lives near Sooke, where he reads, writes, plays jazz.

Workshops are currently limited to only 12 people, and may be adjusted based on public health protocols at the time of the event.

We will be accepting a wait list for this event, as refunds will be accepted in light of potential Covid-19 or travel restrictions.

The venue will be sanitized between and throughout each workshop, and attendees will be provided health and safety instructions in accordance with WorkSafeBC and Provincial Health guidelines in the days prior to the festival.
