Description

Naomi Woo is a pianist, conductor, and researcher, currently pursuing a PhD as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. 2017-2018 highlights include conducting Holst’s chamber opera Savitri (ADC Theatre), performing Carnival of the Animals alongside pianist Tom Poster (West Road Concert Hall) and assisting conductors Sir Mark Elder and Jac Van Steen with the Cambridge University Orchestra as the CUMS Conducting Scholar. With Sasha Amaya, she runs tick tock, which has staged choreographic and musical performances at venues including Somerset House (London), The Cockpit Theatre (London), The Round Church (Cambridge), aceartinc. (Winnipeg), Das Kapital (Berlin), and the Academy of Performing Art (Prague). A Certain Sense of Order, collaboratively created with Catherine Kontz, premiered at Tête à Tête in 2017, and has been praised as “a gentle, thoughtful, provocative and beautiful piece” (Bill Bankes-Jones, Tête à Tête Opera Festival) and “skillful and experimental” (3:AM Magazine). Naomi also holds a BA in mathematics & philosophy from Yale University, and degrees in piano performance from the Yale School of Music and Université de Montréal.

Founded in 2010, the Dash Duo has delighted audiences across the United States with their virtuoso performances. Husband and wife trumpeters Mary Elizabeth Bowden and David Dash teach at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts; Dash as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Bowden as a Resident Artist. They have commissioned James Stephenson’s powerful Awakenings, for two trumpets and organ. The Dash Duo has given recitals and masterclasses at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Lee University, and the University of New Mexico as well as several concert series. They have performed as a duo with the Naples Concert Band and Naples Symphony Orchestra. Next season, they will appear with the Richmond Philharmonic performing Hunsberger’s arrangement of the Carmen Fantasia under the baton of Peter Wilson and make their Canadian debut in Vancouver. Mary is a Yamaha Artist and has multiple recordings through Summit Records. She performs as an international soloist and chamber musician with her group, Seraph Brass. David is a member of the Santa Fe Opera and was previously a member of the Naples Philharmonic and “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. Mary and David perform together in the Watson Brass, the faculty quintet at UNCSA.

Classical Trumpeter and Gold Medal Global Music Award Winner Mary Elizabeth Bowden has been described by Gramophone Magazine as “brilliant” and “radiant in new repertoire for trumpet.” Bowden, a Yamaha Performing Artist, released her debut album “Radiance” on Summit Records. She has been featured on MPR’s “New Classical Tracks” with Julie Amacher, which is being aired on NPR stations nationwide. Bowden is the First Prize winner of the 2012 International Women’s Brass Conference Trumpet Competition. She has performed as a soloist with the Peninsula Symphony (California), Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, Croatian Army Wind Band, Festival Amadeus Strings (Montana), and many others. Bowden is a founding member of Seraph Brass and Chrysalis Chamber Players, a recipient of a Yale Alumni Grant. She has collaborated in chamber music programs at the Marlboro Music Festival, Lakes Area Music Festival, The Banff Centre and at the Sydney Opera House. She has served on the adjunct faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University and at The Curtis Institute of Music’s Young Artist Summer Program. Bowden is currently Principal Trumpet of the Artosphere Festival Orchestra and a member of the Richmond Symphony. She has also served as Principal Trumpet of New Zealand’s Auckland Philharmonia, Sarasota Opera Orchestra, the Daejeon Philharmonic in Korea and the Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland. David Dash is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and a member of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. He was previously Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Naples Philharmonic and a member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, where he performed as a soloist and toured much of the United States. David has also performed with the symphonies of Atlanta, Baltimore, Charleston, Charlotte, and San Francisco, the Florida Orchestra, and the Sarasota Opera. In addition to “The President’s Own,” he has performed as a soloist with the Naples Philharmonic, Naples Orchestra and Chorus, Naples Concert Band, Monmouth Symphony, and the Astoria Symphony. He has recorded for Pentatone (Santa Fe Opera’s Grammy nominated Cold Mountain, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs), Koch International, Albany Records, Naxos, and “The President’s Own”. David is a graduate of Rice University and the Manhattan School of Music. His teachers include Armando Ghitalla and Robert Sullivan.
