Event description

Description

OVERVIEW:

Learn the foundational concepts, theory and techniques you will need to be an effective data scientist.

DESCRIPTION:

This is the first of a series of data science boot camps to prepare you for a career as a data scientist. We will focus on learning the fundamentals data science techniques and algorithms, all in the context of the Data Science Process. In this boot camp, you will build a solid foundation for working with regression, classification, clustering and recommendation models and learning how to use them to develop four predictive applications based on real-world datasets. We will go over how to build, evaluate and fine-tune each type of model, as well the R and Python tech stack. After completing this boot camp, you will be able to choose the right tools and techniques to analyze a variety of datasets.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By taking this course you be able to do the following:
Set up an analysis environment on AWS for Python and R
Understand the basics of supervised and unsupervised algorithms
For regression, classification, clustering and recommender systems you will:
- Understand the input and outputs of the model
- Analyze the model performance
- Optimally tune model parameters with cross-validation
- Use the model to generate recommendations or prediction
- Implement these techniques in R and Python

PORTFOLIO PROJECTS:

Regression: Build and tune a linear regression model to accurately predict future housing sale prices.
Classification: Build and tune a logistic regression model to accurately detect spam messages.
Clustering: Build and tune a k-means model and use it to detect clusters of similar wines based
on a sommelier reviews dataset.
Recommender System: Build and tune a content-based recommender system, and use it to accurately generate book recommendations from a book review data set.

TESTIMONIALS:

"This was an eye opening and informative session where I learned a lot in a short time about data science, and data science trends. Reuben is a very good teacher, knows his stuff, and is easy to talk to. The handouts and especially the environment setup assistance were very helpful. I am looking forward to the January session." - Ryan H.
"Loved the session, very informative" - Gursev Bajwa
" Very informative!" - Ruoyu Qian
"Reuben, I just want to thank you so much for the excellent workshop today. It was great and very informative....Keep up the great work and looking forward to attenting the next meetup" - Mohamed Judi
"Well prepared and inspiring." - Sungmin Park

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Reuben is the Data Scientist at the CARPROOF Product Lab, where he uses machine learning and statistics to transform the vehicle purchasing experience. Prior to joining CarProof, he worked as the Data Scientist at Real Matters (TSX. REAL) which was named as Canada’s most Innovative Company after going public in May of 2017. He hold a BSc. and a MSc. in Statistics, both from the University of Toronto.

In his spare time, he is working to develop the curriculum for a data science boot-camp (stealth) at a prominent Canadian university starting in the fall of 2018!
