Event description
Join us for a series of presentations that will visualize data sets covering topics related to the 2030 SDG’s.

About this Event

Join us at the University of New Brunswick's Wu Conference Centre on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019 for the 4th annual Data Visualization Competition. Students and community members from across Canada will demonstrate the power of data available from all levels of government, academia and industry available to the public to showcase the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The Data Visualization Competition will highlight the community-wide benefits of data visualization, including identifying potential improvements to government services and procedures, and recognizing potential business opportunities.

Competitors will analyze, interpret, and compile the existing data and present a recommendation or solution on subjects ranging from social, environmental, and economic. The challenge is to convert complex data into an easy to understand presentation and communicate it to the audience. This event provides students and citizens with valuable hands on research experience, and to engage members of academia, public and private sectors.

Teams will be required to present the data they have analyzed to judges in a rapid “pitch” format in addition to creating an infographic poster for display during the event. It is an ideal setting for citizens to get engaged, to meet leaders in academia, government, and private organizations, and to explore the world of data science.

Paola Beneras will also be speaking on: The Power of Data: Reading Numbers for Evidence-Based Decisions

This talk will be a look at how data can help inform decisions. The talk highlights importance of not only understanding but presenting data in a way that makes it accessible and digestible to readers and policy makers. Most of the examples used are from a developing country framework.
