Data Visualization Workshop

Location: Patterson Hall 224

Instructor: Phil Renaud

Bio: Phil is a developer and speaker with interests ranging from data visualization to natural language processing and data journalism. His primary code workflow involves Javascript (D3.js, Ember, Underscore) Python (Pandas, NumPy, NLTK), and Gephi. In 2013 he co-founded Affinio, a Halifax-based data science startup.

Purpose: To introduce the basics of data visualization, its history, methodologies and tools. To present demonstrations and allow the participants to experience one or more visualization tools using sets of canned data. Sorry, this intro will not allow sufficient time to explore data brought by the participants.

Audience: Wide cross-section: students, faculty, staff, business and industry persons. All participants must bring their own laptop, and should be comfortable with using tools such as Excel, web browsers, etc.

Resources/Materials:

- Classroom setting for up to 30 people

- Each participant (or pair of participants) must bring their laptop and be able to connect to the internet.

- All cross-platform software will be downloaded from the web or run on a browser

- There will be coffee, tea, juice, cookies and fruit available at 5:30pm that will last through to the 7:15pm break.

Schedule:

5:30 – Registration and refreshments

6:00 – Welcome and Intros

6:10 - History and Basics of Data Visualization, Motivation, Overview of Methods and Tools.

6:30 - Demonstration of methods and tools on various data sets

6:50 – Setup of participant’s laptops for tutorials and workshop

7:15 – Break and refreshments and him

7:30 – Hands-on guided tutorial using simple/small canned data

8:00 – Hands-on guided tutorial using more complex/larger canned data

8:30 – Open workshop using canned data

9:00 – Close

This workshop is FREE, but must register by February 25th, 2015.
