Event description

Description

Washington DC is the seat of federal power. Yet, DC residents have less representation in the Capitol than other US citizens. Not only that, our local laws and budgets are more vulnerable to Congressional interference than other jurisdictions. How did we get here and what can we do?

Join us for a panel discussion about DC Democracy, including the establishment of home rule, DC’s relationship with Congress, and how local officials—and you—can protect our autonomy and local values. We’ll answer your questions and debunk some myths along the way. You’ll leave better equipped to resist incursions on your rights, and the rights of your neighbors. DC Appleseed has been on the forefront of expanding local autonomy for decades and believes the law is more on the side of the people of DC than many realize.

6:30 - 7:00: Gather and network (hosted bar)
7:00 - 8:00: Expert panel with Q&A

Panelists:
Robert C. White, Jr, At-Large DC Councilmember
Lorie Masters, Partner at Hunton & Williams LLP
Walter Smith, Executive Director of DC Appleseed

Moderator:
Dawnn Leary, Senior Community Investment Officer, The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region
