With today's society taking an unprecedented shift toward an artificial intelligence (AI) based future, there have never been so many promising opportunities for discovery and innovation within the digital age in which we currently live. Durham College is establishing itself as an AI-hub, offering many opportunities to students and companies for working with AI. FastStartDC in collaboration with the Office of Research Services, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ORSIE) is proud to announce a workshop series that will introduce the fundamentals of developing practical artificial intelligence. This workshop series will cover working with Data, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence concepts to help guide students into the right direction for developing AI in the future.

Student participants selected to take part will attend a 5-part workshop series and cover the following content:

Oct 2, 4-6pm: MODULE 1 - Python and NumPy (Machine learning number manipulation library)

  • Learn how to develop basic Python code along with using a Python library (NumPy) that is widely used in the industry for machine learning and artificial intelligence. NumPy will be used throughout the duration of the workshop series.

Oct 16, 4-6pm: MODULE 2 - Working with Data

  • Learn how to work with and manipulate datasets. Datasets are used as a primary source of input for machine learning algorithms. In order for these algorithms to learn and grow over time, understanding and working efficiently with data is paramount.

Oct 30, 4-6pm: MODULE 3 - Intro to Machine Learning

  • This workshop will help you understand the theoretical concepts behind traditional machine learning including classification, regression, cost, and optimization. This will provide a pathway into the implementation of machine learning algorithms

Nov 14, 4-6pm: MODULE 4 - Working with Machine Learning Algorithms

  • Learn to work with a python library (sklearn) to implement several machine learning algorithms on various datasets.

Nov 20, 4-6pm: MODULE 5 - Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

  • This workshop is your introduction to artificial intelligence and how it relates to machine learning. You will be introduced to AI concepts being used in the industry and how you can go about learning how to implement this on your own in the future.
