SCWIST BROWN BAG SERIES 2020
Dealing with the Media: How to KISS
There is a keen need for women in STEM to reach out to the media to counter the overwhelming flow of misinformation. Stats show that the far right, including anti-STEM posts, represent more social media posts than all other perspectives put together, be they economic conservatives, centrists, or social democrats.
Here is a chance to practise plain language skills, to learn how to Keep It Simple, Silly and to show your enthusiasm for what you do. We will learn what the media’s goals are. They can be different from yours but theses goals are not mutually exclusive. You can give the media what they need (snappy clips/quotes, a good visual or sound, and your enthusiasm for your field) while maintaining your dignity and goals.
Program:
12:00-12:10 Welcome
12:10-12:35 Presentation
12:35-12:55 Q&A
12:55-1:00 Closing
SPEAKER
Lorraine Graves used her university science education, and constant dabbling in the media as a student, to enter the brand new field of science journalism in the 1980s as a TV news science reporter in Vancouver. Later, she went on to create, produce and host her own series, “Breakthrough” that aired on the CBC network. She left paid work to be with the child she didn’t think she’d be able to have. Returning to journalism and public speaking has proven a daunting and exhilarating venture.
