Event description

Description

Listen as a panel of judges from the Ontario and Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal come together to discuss their observations from the Bench as to what they find to be effective advocacy in closing submissions. Learn about the art of persuasive advocacy in judge alone trials, to jury trials and through to the appellate arguments. Our panel will share with you what they expect of counsel, what they need from counsel and what they hope you never do when appearing before them.

The judges panel, moderated by Jessica Smith-Joy (crown counsel) will include Justice Kimberley Crosbie (OCJ), Justice Nancy Dennison (SCJ), Justice Michelle Fuerst (SCJ), Justice Iona Jaffe (SCJ) and Justice Sarah Peppal (ONCA).

Organizer WELL Women Educating in Law and Life

Organizer of Delivering closing submissions WELL

Women Educating in Law and Life was created by women from both the Crown Attorney’s Office and the Defence bar who saw the need to foster discussion, mentorship and collegiality amongst women in the criminal bar.  Our objective is to create a forum for female members of the criminal bar to share practice tips, gain insight into how to improve and expand advocacy skills and, most importantly, build supportive relationships and collegiality across the courtroom.
