About this Event
Facilitated by the Caregivers Network of Alberta and funded in part by the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program, this series of 90-minute workshops will feature the following topics:
- What are the early signs and symptoms of dementia and how can we better manage our lives affected by it? Discover strategies for success in handling this diagnosis.
- What gets labeled as "behaviors" around a dementia diagnosis is actually barriers in communication and comprehension. Dementia causes roadblocks to normal perception and can therefore cause negative reactions. Discover what you can do different to reduce challenging situations.
- Learn how to recognize what services may be available in order to increase your confidence and understanding of support systems. We'll also include techniques for communicating effectively and preparing for appointments with health care and social service professionals.
- Take a closer look at caregiver stress and how it affects your personal well-being. Learn how you can avoid burnout and explore ways to foster resiliency, hope and seek a better balance in caregiving.
- Caregivers often have very high and therefore, unrealistic expectations of themselves. Adopt new strategies for overcoming unhealthy patterns of guilt and better understand your emotions and feelings.
- Conflict is a normal part of human life, and most definitely arises in the caregiving journey. Learn how to negotiate through conflict and improve your overall health and well-being.
- Caregivers of persons with dementia often experience a sense of prolonged loss. It is a constant, daily reminder of just how challenging this disease can be. This session will explore how to embrace an ever-changing relationship and celebrate what remains.
- You can't give from an empty cup. If we want to be healthy caregivers, we must take care of our entire body, mind and spirit. Get familiar with muscle tension in your body and discover how thoughts and beliefs can empower positive change in your life.
