Event description
Democracy Talks: Tools to Connect People’s Passions and Concerns to Canada’s Democracy with Andrea Balfour

About this event

In the lead-up to the October Federal Election, Righting Relations member, Andrea Balfour from City for All Women Initiative and Making Voices Count will lead an Online Learning Exchange for facilitators who are working in community to strengthen civic engagement and political analysis. Democracy Talks is a set of engaging, popular education tools for facilitators to engage communities in conversation around the public policy issues they care most about, the principles of democracy, understanding power in the Canadian political system, and how to make our voices heard.

About the Facilitator: Andrea Balfour has been involved in an Ottawa based initiative, Making Voices Count, and brings her learning back to her communities by facilitating civic engagement sessions with residents to encourage them to influence election results and city decision making process. Andrea's experience of being a single mom of two children and trying to make ends meet motives her to make her community a better place for everyone. She is very committed to social justice and is always trying to engage others to take action and link them to resources. Her advocacy work contributed to the City of Ottawa's creation of a low-income transit pass (EquiPass) in 2017.

Democracy Talks: A Program for Community Groups to Inspire Citizen Engagement was created by the Samara Centre for Democracy and shared with us through The Democratic Engagement Exchange at Ryerson University and Elections Canada.
