Developing Your Non-Profit Leadership Practice
Great leadership enables people and organizations to thrive. Great leadership brings out the best in everyone, and it models the alignment between actions and values.
In times of constant change the non-profit sector needs great leadership! And our leaders come from many places - on-the-ground volunteers to board members, front-line staff to Executive Directors.
In the non-profit sector, leaders work with limited and changing resources, attend to diverse stakeholders, and often assume multiple roles within their organizations. So, where do you exercise your leadership and how do you want to expand your potential?
Developing Your Non-Profit Leadership Practice has been designed for emerging and established leaders who want to deepen their understanding of their personal leadership style and expand their leadership capacity and impact in the sector.
Beginning with a one-day face-to-face launch the course proceeds with six weeks of on-line learning. Participants should plan to invest between 6-10 hours per week during this time period.
Through exposure to new tools and an array of assignments, evaluations and peer-learning initiatives participants will:
- Cultivate an acute understanding of non-profit management and systems.
- Develop tools for greater organizational effectiveness.
- Fulfill assignments that are designed to provide you with hands-on learning opportunities.
- Explore your own context in the workplace.
- Access weekly peer coaching and feedback.
By the end of the course you will have explored new approaches to leadership and learning, deepened your leadership understanding and skills, and defined ways to have a greater impact in your organization and community.

- Start Date: Monday, January 30th., 2017
- First Mandatory face-to-face session: Tuesday, Jan 31st. 2017 9am-4pm
- Second Mandatory face-to-face session/Closing Celebration: Thursday, Mar 9th. 2017 5-7pm
- Course End date: Sunday, March 12th, 2017

Ruth Whyte is a facilitator and designer of experiential programs that help people find their passions and become champions for a better world. She is the former Director of the Pearson Seminar on Youth Leadership at Lester B. Pearson United World College. With a background in international community development, Ruth has coordinated volunteer programs with organizations in remote communities around the globe (including in Argentina, Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, and Uganda). Additionally, she has designed leadership programs for youth in Canada, Costa Rica, France, and Spain. She holds an MA in Leadership from Royal Roads University, and a BA in Latin American Studies and Geography from Simon Fraser University.
Leanna Hill is passionate about community and the role that individuals play in supporting a healthy community. She has many years experience working in non-profit organizations, with much of that time spent supporting emerging professionals and youth in their leadership development and engagement. Committed to lifelong learning principles, she has been facilitating workshops and leadership learning opportunities for over a decade, and holds a Master of Arts in Leadership through Royal Roads University. she is the former Manager of Community Learning & Development at Volunteer Victoria, where she supported the professional development of Victoria’s non-profit sector, and co-authored this course. Currently Hill is a Learning Consultant at BC Public Service Agency. Her volunteer experience includes place-based community action, non-profit governance and national advisory roles.
