Event description

Description

Research has documented the correlation between the exposure to interpersonal trauma during childhood and addictive behavior later in life. Childhood exposure to victimization is prevalent and has been shown to contribute to significant immediate and long-term psychological distress and functional impairment. Exposure to profound adversity in childhood while the brain and mind are developing can alter development, changing the trajectory of a child’s life. Our presentation this year continues to look at the interconnection between Trauma and addiction incorporating some treatment options and interventions. Our presenter, Dr. Lori Haskell, is a Clinical Psychologist who is an expert in the field of trauma. Her interests include trauma, victimization, vicarious trauma, sexual abuse and sexual violence in relation to psychological development. She is an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and is an Academic Research Associate with the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children. Participation in this workshop will enhance understanding of traumatic stress and provide skills for immediate use in a variety of clinical settings.
