The University of Guelph is hosting a series of 4-day workshops on topics related to digital humanities research and teaching from May 4-7th, 2020.

All are welcome! Please read below for information on the workshops, instructors and registration.

Any workshops with insufficient enrollment by mid-April will be cancelled. For more information please email dhguelph@uoguelph.ca.


(Each course runs daily for the full four days, so only one course may be taken in this session.)


1. Materializing the Collection (Milena Radzikowska, Dr. Shana MacDonald)

2. Computational Digital Humanities: Command Line Fundamentals (David J. Birnbaum, Emma Schwarz)

3. Reading the Humanities from a Distance: A Survey of Text Analysis Tools (Jennifer Marvin)

4. Semantic Text Analysis with Word Embeddings (Lisa Baer)

5. Equity in Digital Publishing (Ela Przybylo, Amy Verhaeghe, Sharifa Patel, Krista Benson, Jae Basiliere)

6. Spatial Humanities: Exploring GIS in the Humanities (Quin Shirk-Luckett, Teresa Lewitzky)

7. Machine Learning and Digital Humanities (Dr. Rachel Starry, Paul Barrett, Nathan Taback)

8. Linked Data and Ontologies for the Humanities (Susan Brown, Kim Martin, Deb Stacey)

9. Getting Going with Scholarship Online: An Introduction to CWRC (Mihaela Illovan, Susan Brown)


Each workshop will take place over 4 days (May 4-7th) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Additional events will be planned outside of class time, including opening reception, keynote speaker, and optional social events (at individual cost). A full schedule will be posted closer to the date.

Please note the workshop registration period will end May 1st, 2020. Please ensure registration is complete before this time.


The registration fees listed below cover four days of instruction, reception, and attendance at the keynote and panel discussions.

Early Bird Registration (Before March 15th, 2020)

  • Students/sessionals/postdocs: $200
  • Guelph faculty/staff: $350
  • Other faculty/staff: $500

Registration (After March 15, 2020)

  • Students/sessionals/postdocs: $250
  • Guelph faculty/staff: $450
  • Other faculty/staff: $600

Please note: Withdrawal from the DH@Guelph Summer Workshops prior to April 15th will result in a refund of registration, minus a $75 administration fee. Registration after this date will not be refunded.
