Our theme for the 2016-2017 season is Making the Link: Financial Sustainability and Measuring Outcomes. The focus is on the increasing prevalence of chronic disease in the workplace, and assessing the impact of emerging solutions and plan member support programs, and whether these solutions are improving health outcomes and benefits program financial sustainability.
Diabetes is now one of the highest categories of private drug plan spend, with a number of new treatment options recently introduced into the market. The sessions will provide a brief overview of diabetes and its impact on individuals, both physically and mentally, and on their work performance. We will also hear about new diabetes medications on the market, and what an insurer and plan advisor are doing - or considering doing – to address the growth in diabetes prevalence and the rising cost and burden on both employers and employees.
Registration, breakfast and networking: 8:00 – 8:30am
Presentations and Panel Discussion: 8:30 – 10:30am
Barbara Martinez, National Practice Leader, Drug Benefits Solutions, Great-West Life, will discuss how diabetes drug categories are approached from a plan design and adjudication perspective, as well as other ways of addressing diabetes as well as other emerging trends.
Irene Higgins-Bowser is a Registered Dietitian and Diabetes Educator with Cobequid Diabetes Management Clinic in Halifax. Irene is also a caregiver for family members with diabetes, and will discuss how patients are impacted at each stage of diabetes, as well as obstacles to lowering blood glucose levels, particularly in a work setting. Irene will also provide a brief overview of the main diabetes drug categories, the interaction between categories and how diabetes drugs – when prescribed, covered and used correctly – help patients to better manage their diabetes risks.
A panel discussion will follow that includes our presenters as well as Anne-Marie Smith, Practice Lead, Drug Management Solutions, Medavie Blue Cross and Jody Crowther, GBA, Benefits Consultant at Arthur J. Gallagher Canada Limited. Panelists will discuss financial vs outcomes considerations around coverage for diabetes medications and other support resources.
