Event description

Description

SaskParks is excited to partner with the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society to conduct an archaeological dig in a location known to house original buildings at Carlton House. For the first time ever, the public is invited to participate in this hands-on event that will undoubtedly uncover treasures that have been buried for over 130 years!

NOTE: All participants must sign a waiver to participate in the archaeological dig.

About Fort Carlton Provincial Park

Fort Carlton, also known as Carlton House, was an important hub for the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) from 1810 to 1885. Initially HBC shared a common stockade with its trading rival, the North West Company, who left the fort to the HBC in 1822. The post was built to trade for furs, but it quickly became a provisioning and transportation post. By 1882, the fur trade post was at skeleton staff as the fur trade era was coming to an end. In 1884, the North-West Mounted Police were stationed at the post in response to growing unrest in the area. Fort Carlton was accidentally burned down during a hasty evacuation that took place during the Northwest Resistance of 1885.

Since 1967, the stockade for the last post, six buildings within the stockade, and the Chief Factor's house have all been reconstructed. Extensive archaeological research has been undertaken throughout the 1960s and 1970s at the park, but few written reports have been completed.
