I Love YYC Chinatown presents – Secrets of Chinatown in 3 walks:

Walk #3 - Friday, August 25th, 2017

history – secret murals – poetry - art & sculptures – food

4pm – Self-guided tour of Cultural Centre Museum featuring “Our Chosen Land” ($5)
5pm – Chinatown walking tour with Dale Lee Kwong and Larissa Lai ($5). Meet at the the front steps (east side) of the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre.
7:30pm – Optional 10-course Chinese dinner at Silver Dragon Restaurant ($25 tax & tip included)

**EventBrite RSVP is used only for the dinner at Silver Dragon. It closes at 5PM on August 24. Attendees will pay $25 to Silver Dragon on the day of. There will be a separate RSVP/Ticket for the walk.**


About This Walk:
4pm (optional) – come at least 45 minutes before the walk to explore the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum. “Our Chosen Land” documents the history of Calgary’s Chinatown, including letters and petitions of complaint to council about the early Chinese community. The Museum also features an overview of Chinese history around the world, and terra cotta soldiers from Xi’an are on display! ($5 admission fee)

5pm - Dale Lee Kwong and Larissa Lai will guide participants to highlights of Chinatown while sharing poetry related to their personal history, and Chinese-Canadian themes. Expect food samples, introduction to mystery foods & ancient cooking techniques, historical sculptures, Chinese-themed murals, congo line through a Chinese grocery store and more! ($5 fee)


7:30pm (optional) – stay for a traditional 10-course Chinese dinner at Silver Dragon Restaurant with leaders of the walk ($25 tax and tip included). Accessible by stairs only.

About the Walk Team:
Dale Lee Kwong is a poet, essayist, and playwright. She is native Calgarian and third-generation Chinese-Canadian. Her work explores Chinese-Canadian history, diversity & inclusion, adoption, and LGBTQ issues.

Larissa Lai is the author of two novels, When Fox Is a Thousand and Salt Fish Girl; two books of poetry, sybil unrest (with Rita Wong) and Automaton Biographies; a chapbook, Eggs in the Basement; and most recently, a critical book, Slanting I, Imagining We: Asian Canadian Literary Production in the 1980s and 1990s.

Caution:

Busy sidewalks, uneven steps, and curbs
Resident dog on tour, no other dogs allowed
Due to historical content, recommended for teens and up
