Event description

Description

Felting is fun! This workshop is designed for people who wish to learn about using different coloured wool and fibre to create a felt piece of art for display! The emphasis will be on learning techniques that you will be able to explore further if you choose to do more wet-felting. We will be discussing basic “laying-out” techniques.

No previous wet-felting experience is necessary! You can successfully produce a beautiful piece of wet felt art for display regardless of your level of experience and with little investment in tools and supplies. But watch out, its addictive and you will want to keep learning more!

Workshop topics:

  • Going over the basic steps of making felt from wool tops or batt

  • Using pre-felt as a base for landscape and discussing other options for making the base

  • Laying out a landscape and “painting” with wool using blending and overlaying techniques

  • Experimenting with different fibres and seeing how they provide surface detail

  • Discussing needle-felting and stitching options and experimenting with them in time allows

  • Discussing ways that your finished product can be supported and displayed

We’ll start with making a felt “sampler” from scratch which will enable us to work on some basic techniques before starting the main project. Then we will create or own beautiful individual landscapes – while looking at examples and talking techniques and display ideas!

Audience: This workshop is suitable for adults and teenagers.

Supplies: Supplies included in the workshop include pre-felt, wool and fibre and plastic sheeting.

Additional supplies that you will need to bring are:

  • Notebook, pen, scissors, measuring tape or ruler, tweezers, two or more bath towels, large-eye sewing needle, bar of soap, and bubble wrap (enough to cover both sides of a 12” x 15” felt).

  • Rolling noodle (also known as a ‘water noodle’, found at Walmart or Canadian Tire). Fay will have some spare bubble wrap and rolling noodles on hand.

  • Additional optional items you may wish to bring: carders, coloured thread, yarn, wool locks, loosely woven silk or cotton fabric or any interesting fibres that you would like to experiment with!

Please don’t forget a lunch, water bottle and snack!
