Event description

Description

Welcome to the annual York University Faculty of Education Summer Institute (FESI) 2019 in partnership with the Réseau de Savoir sur l’Équité/Equity Knowledge Network (RSEKN), hosted by the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Education and the Centre for Research on Educational and Community Services (CRECS).

The 2019 FESI/RSEKN conference will challenge and question long-held educational beliefs, policies and practices that have become embedded and normalized in educational landscapes. It aims to disrupt the taken-for-granted assumptions, ideas and practices of what constitutes education, who has access to it, and which values are legitimated by it. We will critically assess how these dominant beliefs, policies and practices have historically created barriers to student access, engagement, achievement and well-being, and how those barriers are perpetuated today.

Guiding Question for Day 1 - What is the past and present history of colonial education in Canada? What long-held educational beliefs, policies and practices serve as barriers to access, opportunities and outcomes for Indigenous, racialized and marginalized students?

Guiding Question for Day 2 - How might we dismantle these barriers? How might we create the conditions for the transformation of systems that produce and reproduce these barriers in the first place?
