Our next edition of the John W. Holmes Memorial Lecture at Glendon will be held on March 1, 2022, at 12 PM, featuring Nahlah Ayed, Host of CBC Radio One’s Ideas and award-winning veteran of foreign reporting.

At a time when traditional media models are in flux and under sustained attack, when opinions routinely rival fact: what is the role of the foreign correspondent? Nahlah Ayed reflects on nearly two decades spent working around the globe and contemplating the age-old story of “them” and “us.”

About the featured speaker

Nahlah Ayed is an award-winning veteran of foreign reporting: first, in the Middle East where she spent nearly a decade covering the region’s many conflicts. And later, while based in London, she covered many of the major stories of our time: Russia’s annexation of Crimea, Europe’s refugee crisis, the Brexit vote and its fallout.

A former parliamentary reporter for The Canadian Press, Nahlah is a graduate of Carleton University's Master of Journalism program. She also holds a Master's degree in interdisciplinary studies (Philosophy, English and Science) and a Bachelor of Science in genetics from the University of Manitoba.

The John Holmes Memorial Lecture at Glendon

The annual John Holmes Memorial Lecture at Glendon honours the late John W. Holmes, Canadian diplomat, writer, administrator, and professor of International Relations at Glendon from 1971 to 1981. Holmes was a tireless promoter of Canada at home and abroad, in political, diplomatic and educational circles. He also participated in the founding of the United Nations and attended its first General Assembly in 1945.

À propos de la conférencière d'honneur

Nahlah Ayed est une correspondante à l’étranger chevronnée : d’abord basée au Moyen-Orient où elle a passé près de dix ans à couvrir les nombreux conflits de la région, elle a ensuite été basée à Londres, d’où elle couvert plusieurs grands événements de notre époque : l’annexion de la Crimée par la Russie, la crise des réfugiés en Europe, le vote du Brexit et ses retombées.

Ancienne journaliste parlementaire pour la Presse canadienne, Nahlah est diplômée du programme de maîtrise en journalisme de l’Université Carleton. Elle détient également une maîtrise en études interdisciplinaires (philosophie, anglais et sciences) et un baccalauréat ès sciences en génétique de l’Université du Manitoba.

La Conférence annuelle John Holmes à Glendon commémore feu John W. Holmes, diplomate canadien, écrivain, administrateur et professeur de relations internationales à Glendon de 1971 à 1981. John Holmes fut l’infatigable champion du Canada, au pays comme à l’étranger, dans les milieux politiques, diplomatiques et éducatifs. Il prit part à la fondation des Nations Unies et assista à la première Assemblée générale de l’organisme en 1945.
