Event description

Description

In 1990, the province of Ontario created a Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and tasked it with conducting criminal investigations of police interactions with civilians, when those interactions end with serious injury or death.

Over the years, there have been questions raised about the Unit, its staff, and how it conducts its investigations. Why are all of the investigators at the Unit former police officers? Why doesn’t the Unit ever charge police officers? Why so much secrecy?

A member of the SIU will explain the unit's operations and dispel many of the myths surrounding the SIU as part of Toronto Public Library's Civil Society program series.
