About this Event

Program Summary:

Resolving disputes in the unionized context requires managers to understand and feel confident when participating in the grievance process, from informal discussions through to preparing for arbitration.

This 1.5 day course provides participants with a comprehensive and hands-on skills development approach to effective grievance handling.

Considerable focus is placed on learning how to : interpret collective agreement language; prepare for and respond to grievances, including effective engagement of union representatives inside of the process. Participants will develop a keen understanding of how to utilize the grievance process to resolve disputes in a productive and timely manner that brings clarity and closure to issues arising from the administration/application of the collective agreement.

In view of the current COVID-19 landscape, we will be offering this course via Zoom. Participants will be supported and coached online as they work through exercises and sector-specific case studies to enhance the learning.

Instructors

Debbie Craig ,Director, Labour Relations, BCPSEA

Debbie is a seasoned practitioner with 20 plus years of experience in the field of human resources and labour relations. Debbie has worked for crown corporations and various public sector environments. Debbie worked for many years with the City of Vancouver in various HR andLR roles, including working as the Director of Labour Relations. Debbie joined the Education Sector in 2007 as the Director of Labour Relations for the Surrey School District. Debbie spent 7 years in her role with Surrey Schools overseeing the correct interpretation/application of several collective agreements, grievance and arbitration work, investigating allegations of employee misconduct and harassment, as well as participating in collective bargaining processes. Debbie joined BCPSEA in April of 2017 as a Director of Labour Relations providing advice and support to several member school districts as well as overseeing BCPSEA’s Learning Series. Debbie has a degree in liberal arts and in business from Simon Fraser University.

 Adrianna F. Wills, Partner, Harris and Company

Adriana advises and advocates for clients on workplace law matters, with emphasis on labour relations, human rights, and employment issues. While representing clients in both the public and private sectors, she has particular expertise with municipal and health employers, and with the broader public sector, including crown corporations.Adriana combines the foundational belief that clients want practical solutions to workplace problems with over 30 years’ experience with employment relationships, particularly unionized workplace environments.

Adriana has developed and presented training ranging from first-line supervisory skills to more complex subjects relating to the application of human rights principles. She believes in working as part of the employer’s team to ensure managers and supervisors are aware of potential pitfalls and know to seek advice in a timely way.
