Event description

Description

As part of Workforce Development Month in October, the Intergovernmental Committee for Economic and Labour Force Development in Toronto (ICE Committee) is hosting an event to advance the policy discussion around disruptive technologies. This is a follow-up to an event held last year that provided a high level assessment of the potential impacts of disruptive technology on the local labour force.

The discussion will focus on:

  1. Social Policy and the changing requirements of the "safety net" if jobs are increasingly automated;
  2. Labour force development policy that is required to help labour force members adapt and prepare for new opportunities as job descriptions change;
  3. Innovation policy as jurisdictions seek to support technology-based economic development that maximizes public benefits

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Steve Orsini, Secretary of the Cabinet and Head of the Ontario Public Service;
  • Dan Breznitz, Munk Chair of Innovation Studies, University of Toronto, and known worldwide as an expert on rapid-innovation-based industries and their globalization, as well as for his pioneering research on the distributional impact of innovation policies;
  • Erin McGinn, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Advanced Education & Skills Development - Advanced Skills Group;
  • Sunil Johal, Research Director at University of Toronto's Mowat Centre; and co-author of the reports "Working without a New" and "Policy Making for the Sharing Economy"
  • Geoff King, international buisness transformation leader and former head of Cisco Canada's Industry Digitalization portfolio for the financial services sector.

Registration and networking begins at 9:00 AM. Light refreshments will be served.

Presentations begin at 9:20 AM.

The event is Free, but seats are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
