Event description
DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY - Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts

About this Event

The Greater St. Catharines Social Justice Network, founded by a group of local Anglican churches, invites you to a special viewing of “Doctrine of Discovery - Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts” at Church of the Configuration, 320 Glenridge Ave., St. Catharines; Tuesday, October 29 at 7:00pm.

Doctrine of Discovery examines a devastating decision, made over 500 years ago, which continues to profoundly impact Indigenous and Settler people worldwide. In 1493, Pope Alexander VI ruled that the lands being discovered by European explorers at the time were “empty” and its millions of Indigenous inhabitants were “non-human”.

This film is one of the responses of the Anglican Church’s Primate’s Commission on Discovery, Reconciliation and Justice. It gives an opportunity to respond to the 94 Calls to Action from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission by providing education and insight into the racist foundations of many laws still in existence to this day.

There is no charge for this event, however, seating is limited so register early to avoid disappointment.
