Does video and TV news need a reboot?

Join us for a talk by UBC Journalism’s 2018 Asper Visiting Professor: David Dunkley Gyimah, PhD

How can television news become more inclusive? Can its “packaged” style of reporting, now almost 70 years old, be rebooted for new audiences? Does diversity have any material impact on the nature of journalism, and if so how does it matter?

In a wide-ranging talk, academic and journalist Dr. David Dunkley Gyimah takes a personalised approach from his experience in front and behind the camera working across BBC Televsion, e.g.: Newsnight, Channel 4 News, as a creative technologist, and now as an educator. The BBC’s director of digital development James Montgomery says, “David’s work is a rare combination of skills in hands-on field reporting, and technology technical innovation.” Apple calls him a “One-man hurricane.”

Dr. Dunkley Gyimah is a senior lecturer at the University of Westminster, where he heads up the newly formed MA program in Digital and Interactive Storytelling. He brings more than 30 years at the forefront of video and multimedia journalism. He is one of the UK’s first official video journalists at Channel One in 1994. He is also an Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre in London.
