Fall is the time for planning, organizing and preparing for the next season. KAM is pleased to offer as part of the 2019 professional development series - Don’t Just Reach for the Bleach! – Museum Conservation 101 Workshop – focussing on basic cleaning techniques for artifacts and other housekeeping tips for museums.


Local conservator Fiona Graham will provide a 3.5 hour workshop that will touch on conservation basics:


  • Basic techniques for dust removal
  • Washing ceramics and glass
  • Polishing silver, brass and copper
  • Vacuuming textiles
  • Cleaning furniture
  • Where to find supplies and equipment
  • General housekeeping tips


About the instructor: Fiona Graham is a Kingston-based conservator specializing in preventive conservation. She teaches in Queen’s University’s Art Conservation Program and for Athabasca University’s Heritage Resource Management Program. For many years she also taught Care of Collections for the Ontario Museum Association. In her thirty-year career she has worked in a number of museums as well as being a Museum Advisor for the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, and a Collection Preservation Advisor for the Department of Canadian Heritage. Fiona’s consulting work includes storage planning and environmental control recommendations for museums, as well as metal conservation services for architectural heritage projects.
