Event description
Free Public Lecture: Presented by the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA)

About this Event

Inflammation is a protective response that provides the body's first defense against invading microbes and tissue injury. Inflammation is also linked to many diseases (arthritis, periodontal disease, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer) where it is uncontrolled and long lasting.

Dr. Serhan's work provides a new understanding of how to combat the burden of chronic inflammation. He showed that omega-3 fatty acids, which are derived mainly from fish oils, are converted to products that resolve inflammation and counteract its effects. This public presentation will focus on these novel findings, which provide a new approach to treating inflammatory diseases including cancer.

There will also be presentations from two CRINA researchers.

Dr. David Brindley: Introduction to inflammation and cancer: new opportunities for improving cancer treatments

Marnie Newell: Fish oil isn't snake oil - Nutritional therapy in breast cancer treatment
