Description

We're excited to bring you another series of Visit the Vault Tours and Exhibition Tours for Doors Open Markham! Take note of the tour times below to plan your visit accordingly.

Visit the Vault Tours | 1PM, 2PM, 3PM

Our Visit of the Vaults tour is back due to popular demand, providing a behind-the-scenes peek into the gallery’s collections storage area. Join us for a fascinating look at how and where artwork is received, stored, catalogued and conserved. With the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Varley Art Gallery was able to undertake a project to upgrade the care and storage of works on paper in the permanent collection (drawings, paintings, prints) and develop a conservation plan for the treatment of fragile works.

Limited participants per tour. RSVP to secure your spot!

**Please plan to arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled tour to sign in as space is very limited. Unclaimed tickets will begin to be distributed on a first come first serve basis 5 minutes prior to the tour.

Exhibition Tours | 1:30PM, 2:30PM, 3:30PM

Join us for a tour of our upcoming fall exhibitions:

Witness: Canadian Art of the First World War

Witness – Canadian Art of the First World War, a travelling exhibition developed by the Canadian War Museum, examines how Canadians depicted their First World War experiences in art, both at home and overseas, whether as official war artists or as soldiers in the field. The works of art presented here are deeply personal testimonies that stand as a record of the conflict, and help to expand our visual understanding of the personal and national impact of this major event in Canadian history.

Inscapes

Curated by Anik Glaude

Featuring works from the Varley Art Gallery of Markham’s permanent collection, Inscapes explores the landscape genre and considers the relationship between it and the natural world it depicts.

This exhibition focuses on representations of the places we inhabit, whether they be physical or imagined. Seascapes, snowscapes, cityscapes, and even mindscapes, are generic terms used to describe the types of environments represented within an artwork. An “inscape,” on the other hand, is defined as the essential quality of a particular human being, object or location.

Limited participants per tour. RSVP to secure your spot!

**Please arrive 5 minutes prior to your tour schedule to sign in.
