Description

Utilizing media is essential to propelling your music career, but in today's world music coverage is a totally different game. A stacked panel of industry pros including Roddy Campbell (Penguin Eggs Magazine), Collin Gallant (Beatroute Magazine), B Hartling (Canadian Beats) and Jess Seguire (Penelope PR) will discuss everything you need to have in place, what makes the media notice new music on an indie level, how media works today, and the do's and don’ts of seeking media attention. This panel will be moderated by Liam Prost (Beatroute/Calgary Folk Fest). A Q & A period will follow!

Speakers:

B Hartling, Canadian Beats

B Hartling is a music journalist with a lifelong passion for music and supporting independent artists. Getting her start in the late 1990's as a reviewer for a print magazine focused on the goth/industrial music scene. She later went on to start her own goth music site which she ran for 5 years before shutting down to focus on other areas of the music industry. Throughout the years, she has been worked in various roles including DJ, booking agent and tour manager working with indie bands. Currently she serves as the Contest & Promotions Manager for the music site Canadian Beats as well as acting as assistant editor and is a contributing writer and photographer for Canadian Beats and several other music blogs.

Roddy Campbell, Penguin Eggs Magazine

Roddy Campbell is the editor and publisher of Penguin Eggs – the only magazine now left in North America that focuses exclusively on folk, roots and world music. He has written for numerous daily newspapers such as the Globe and Mail, The Edmonton Journal, The Halifax Daily News ... as well as international magazines like fRoots, Sing Out! and Dirty Linen. Campbell co-founded the Canadian Folk Music Awards, wrote Playing The Field: The History of The Edmonton Folk Festival, juried numerous Juno Awards, and comments on folk music for BBC Radio Scotland, CBC Radio and CKUA Radio.

Jess Seguire, Penelope PR

Jess Seguire is one of Toronto’s fastest rising media relations specialists in the music & entertainment industry. Named one of PR In Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 in 2015, Seguire boasts some of the freshest creative talent in the industry with a strong network of media contacts that spans across the country. Though she’s a young pup, Seguire has managed numerous successful national publicity campaigns while garnering top-tier media coverage for clients in daily newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations across Canada with her unique and creative strategies. These excellent results have not only cultivated strong relationships with the country’s top outlets, but also with many of the industry’s top label and management teams. Having previously worked with some of the biggest names in Canadian country music such as High Valley, Aaron Pritchett, The Road Hammers, Madeline Merlo, Jordan McIntosh, Doc Walker, Tebey and The Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards, Jess is also known for championing artists in a variety of genres, such as Royal Tusk, The Katherines and multiple JUNO award nominee Jeremy Fisher.

Colin Gallant, Beatroute Magazine

Colin has been an editor at BeatRoute Magazine, Western Canada’s premiere monthly arts and music publication, for more than two years, with a year of experience in its chief editorial role as the Music Editor. Colin has freelanced for other publications including FREQ Magazine, and has recently become the editor-in-chief of the Calgary Journal. In addition to editorial roles, Colin has experience on the other side of media business with communications and marketing experience with organizations such as Sled Island, the Calgary International Film Fest and MRG Concerts. He also sits on several programming juries in music and arts around Calgary, AB. Throughout his work, Colin strives to shine a light of developing and established talent throughout Western Canada and beyond, with an emphasis on strengthening bonds at a local level.

Moderator - Liam Prost

Liam Prost has his fingers in every element of the music industry from writing, to photography, to administration. Starting his career at CFXU 93.3 FM in Nova Scotia, Liam trained DJs in broadcasting and did production for concerts and events. Now he works with Calgary Folk Fest as the Festival Hall Rentals Manager and Food Vendor Manager, and acts as the Roots Editor as well as a contributor and photographer for BeatRoute Alberta. He also sits on the board of the Arts Touring Alliance of Alberta.
