The Gutenberg Bible: Innovation or Imitation?

Gutenberg’s printed bible, produced c. 1455, is often seen as a radical innovation and the start of a new chapter in book production. But was Gutenberg really the innovator we make him out to be? This lecture shows just how little Europe’s first printer deviated from the design of handwritten books made in the Middle Ages. The audience can judge for themselves in the accompanying display of books from VPL’s collections, including a medieval manuscript and a leaf from an actual Gutenberg Bible–quite possibly the most valuable single book page in Metro Vancouver.

Erik Kwakkel is Professor in the History of the Book at UBC’s School of Information.
