Once thought of as being rare, mental health problems are now recognized as being much more common, affecting one in five adults in Canada each year. The topic of mental illness is shrouded in a very powerful stigma and a sense of shame, making acknowledgment and help-seeking very difficult. In this talk, Dr. Condra will discuss types of stigma, its origins and how it affects all of us. He will also describe ways in which each of us can contribute in specific, concrete ways to reducing stigma and working toward developing an environment that is more welcoming and accepting of people who experience mental health problems.

Dr. Condra has completed extensive research on the topic while at Queens University where he held the position of Director or Health Counselling and Disability Services. Dr. Chondra is an experienced workshop leader and presenter on a range of topics, including Mental Health Education, Stigma Reduction, the Assessment of Suicide Risk and Threat Assessment. He co-developed and delivered training workshops in Crisis-Intervention skills to more than 500 individuals including counsellors, crisis workers, nurses, correctional service workers, social workers, teachers, school counsellors, police officers, adolescent/youth workers, psychologists and trainees in these disciplines. In all, he has provided training and information sessions to more than 5,000 people as well as presenting at provincial, national and international conferences.
