Event description

Description

Dual-Religious Belonging: An interdisciplinary exploration of its strengths, limitations, challenges, and appeals.

Location: University of Cambridge, Faculty of Divinity
Date: 18 June 2018

Dual religious belonging (or, the practice of drawing from 2+ religious traditions in forming one’s own spiritual identity) is an increasingly common phenomenon due to religious pluralism and the ways in which individuals have become aware of religious diversity. At the same time, dual religious belonging is not a new phenomenon; for centuries, individuals have negotiated their identity in the midst of belonging to one or more religious traditions. As such, the topic of dual religious belonging will provide a rich ground for interdisciplinary discussion and exploration.

This graduate student symposium will explore the appeals, the strengths, and the difficulties (both practical and conceptual) of dual inter-religious belonging. It will give students in the disciplines of Christian Theology, Philosophy of Religion, Jewish Studies, Hindu Studies, Religious Studies, Cultural Anthropology, and others, opportunities to come together to share their work and raise their questions surrounding the topic of dual-religious belonging.
